Whenever we are asked to give the name of a deserving student , my mind just sees all of our students and there are always several that just jump out of the crowd.  This year, as soon as I got the call, ONE student stood head and shoulders about the rest...there was no need to think very long.  That student is Tia deVera.  Tia is not only a top student but she is also a leader and a role model.  If we ask for volunteers, Tia’s hand goes up.  If we talk about a service idea, Tia is right there sharing her thoughts and suggestions.

When the earthquake hit Haiti, Tia decided on her own to use her own money and send financial help...since the earthquake she sends money each year on the date the earthquake occurred.

Last year, it was suggested that we help the Mary, Gate of Heaven Orphanage in Haiti.  Tia and her Mom, Dr. Adele deVera headed the project.  Moms and their kids came on Saturdays with their sewing machines and materials.  We worked with the founder of that orphanage, Sr. Claire Daneau who gave us the ages and sizes of the children.  Tia cut out most of the dresses and shorts  carefully matching prints and colors.   We sent two barrels of clothing and school supplies!

Dr. Adele deVera went to Jamaica to donate her time and her expertise for the poor children there most of whom had never seen a doctor.  Tia went with her Mom..  At first she just looked around and needed a little time to adjust and figure out what she could do.  Tia ended up registering patients as they came in and escorting them to the doctor.  She was so taken up with everything she saw that she wants to go back this summer.

Tia has it all and is deserving of being nominated St. Patrick School’s Student of the month!

We love you Tia and we know that you will be doing great things throughout your life!
