In April of 2015, a group of ten Jaffrey-Rindge High School students had the opportunity to travel to Nicaragua where they spent a little over a week working in the rural community of Chacraseca assisting in the construction of a house, latrine, and stove. The group traveled with Boston based non-profit FNE International (Facilitate, Network, Empower). John McCarthy, a Jaffrey resident and member of the Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary, had the opportunity to join the group alongside Travis Kumph, a Conant alumni, board member with FNEI and fellow member of the Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary. While in country, the two were able to tour a prison where Rotarians from the Leon, Nicaragua club had started a project to raise funds for a much needed renovation. The local Rotary club focused specifically on the women' s portion of the prison that was built for 4 individuals and currently houses 34. More than 50% of the women currently in the prison have not committed any crimes and are in fact there by choice under protective custody. On Thursday September 3rd, the Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary presented a check for $500 to FNEI, who accepted on behalf of the Leon Rotary Club. The funds will support the prison renovations and demonstrates a strong commitment by the Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary to international service and establishing a long-term relationship with their fellow Rotarians in Leon.
